WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY ADDRESSES THE ‘HOT TOPIC’ OF CLIMATE CHANGE

CASTLEGAR – The 35th World Environment Day addresses climate
change. Held annually on June 5th all over the planet, this
year’s theme is ‘Melting Ice: A Hot Topic’.

The Kootenay Region Branch of the United Nations Association
(KRUNA) will be holding a rally on Tuesday, June 5th at 6pm at
Millennium Park. There will be speakers, including politicians
from all levels of government, music and an open mike. Everyone
is invited to attend.

Climate change is one of the biggest issues that we are facing
today. Our weather is changing, species are going extinct, and
water is drying up. No matter what is going on in our busy lives,
we cannot escape the changing climate.

Many of us are aware of climate change because it is on the news
and talked about everywhere. We are aware that glaciers are
melting and polar bear numbers are declining. We know that storms
are becoming more severe and whole communities are being
devastated. We know that the sea level is raising and huge
populations are being displaced. There is no doubt that climate
change is happening and now is the time to do what we can to
address this major issue.

There is hope; work is being done to tackle climate change.
Federally, an all-party committee has created the Clean Air and
Climate Change Act, which is waiting for second reading.
Provincially, the Throne Speech was filled with green
initiatives. Municipally, the City is building a green city hall.
Throughout the community, individuals are choosing to reduce
their footprint by buying compact fluorescent light bulbs and
using cloth shopping bags. Together we are all making a difference.

This planet is a beautiful planet. It is magical what it can do.
We are only here for a short time so we need to make sure that
our actions don’t affect our grandchildren and all future
generations. The time to act is now. Let’s make sure that we work
together as a community and hold our governments accountable.

Come join KRUNA and the world in celebrating World Environment Day.
