Food for Thought ForumsAre you concerned about rising oil & gas prices? Escalating food prices? Genetically modified food? Support for our farmers? The future of our agricultural lands? Food vs. Biofuel? Localized food production? Global unrest from Food Shortages?.... and more? As part of a National Tour to raise awareness and get input towards the creation of a National Food Policy, Alex Atamanenko, Federal NDP Agriculture and Rural Affairs Critic, has launched a series of Food For Thought Forums across the country. Tuesday, August 19th 7:00 PM Abundance in August at VallicanOn Saturday August 23 the Vallican Whole Community Centre is hosting a celebration of all of us and of local abundance. At 10am, the 100 Mile Market/Bazaar opens featuring: locally produced preserves; fruits, flowers and veggies from your neighbours' farms and gardens; a medley of music; a variety of fine crafts and creations; and a chance to make beautiful art in the company of others. This is an opportunity to find out what we have all been up to over the summer, to share each other's company and to benefit from one another's productivity. The lively day will turn into a scrumptious evening, as you and your family and friends return for the 100-Mile Potluck. (Craig the Rec Guy's take on this phenomenon is: "What grows around, comes around....") The food you have gathered and prepared will be set out between 5 and 6pm, after which everyone will feast and visit -- and remember why we live here. In keeping with the local theme, Nelson Brewery products will be available throughout the dinner. The organizers are also trying to obtain wine from Columbia Gardens, outside Trail. Throughout the day people will be getting together to fashion beautiful, imaginative artworks to festoon the hall and celebrate their creative spirit. Monica Carpendale and the Art Therapy folks will be working and playing together with anyone who want to join them, with paint, fabric, paper, and endless amounts of joy! Music will be woven throughout the day and evening, thanks to Olin McKay and Bo Conlan and other friends who have agreed to ply us with sounds to entertain and move us all. A few surprises may well be in the works, as plotting is afoot to encourage "spontaneous" gathering and re-gathering of musical folks from both near and far. If you want to join in, feel free to bring your instruments and voice. We don't really know what will happen: this is one of those organic events so whatever it is, it will be fun! The 100 Mile Market and Potluck is a community event, generated out of all of us and reflecting our love of our home. If you have an excess of anything you have grown or produced, come and sell it or trade it or share it with your neighbours. If people make money, the organizers would appreciate a small vending fee. The main purpose, however, is for all of us to see and celebrate just how rich we are in the things that really matter. Admission is free. Donations are, of course, more than welcome. To book a table at the market, call 250-226-7730 or e-mail meadow@netidea.com. You can also use this contact info if you have a great idea that would contribute to the event. Blue Bag PetitionWe, the undersigned residents of the City of Nelson or the Central Subregion of the RDCK, want it known that we do not approve of the recently introduced blue bag recycling system. We want an immediate return to the previous system and we want the City of Nelson and the RDCK to plan for a blue box residential pickup system with processing of recyclable material done in the City of Nelson. Petition should be returned to Michael Jessen |

"Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found the exact
amount of injustice and wrongdoing which will be imposed on them; and
these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows,
or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of
those whom they oppress." "There is no reason to think a small group of thoughtful, committed
citizens cannot change the world; indeed, that's the only thing that
ever has." It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is that they can't see
the problem. Gordon Campbell's Legacy: |
